Concrete chamfered edge

A chamfer edge on a concrete is a sloped or angled corner made for improving the aesthetical appearance, safety and easy removal of formwork of concrete. The formation of a sharp nice corner is practically difficult and the concrete at corners is easily chippe therefore the provision of chamfer edge could protect the corner from chipping. Others may consider safety on the contrary because chamfered edge is less liable to damage to the concrete structure and any objects hitting on it.


However, the main reason of the provision of chamfer is to make formworks easier to pull out after concreting operation. They are also used where cabinet tops meet the wall. Usually, concrete members will be buried in block work and the chamfers are often buried in mortar.


As for the safety concerns, I see it from a different perspective. On many occasions, the final architectural details require unchamfered edges. Meaning that any chamfered edges will be unchamfered. We poured the concrete a little higher than the edge of the tube (think surface tension) and then just chamfered by hand with a margin trowel.
