Gap between countertop and backsplash

If the tile backsplash is coming down to meet a 4-inch granite backsplash , treat the granite backsplash exactly like the granite counter : Caulk it to the wall, seal it and leave a small gap between the two areas. This gap , however, can be filled with grout, since both are on the same plane. An obvious gap between a countertop and backsplash is unattractive and it can allow water to seep through.

If the gap is too wide to seal with silicone, narrow trim molding can solve the problem. Grout is no used between countertop and wall tile. Darciegagehas the best solution. A pencil tile trim would cover the gap.


When you install a vanity or floor cabinet, some kind of gap between the countertop and the wall is almost inevitable. Even if you manage to get the cabinet tight enough against the wall to make this gap unnoticeable, movements in the wall or the cabinet may open one up later.
