The surface of soapstone is most commonly sold with a honed finish, which is smooth, like a polish, but is non-reflective. Other finishes are also available, like leather finish. The texture of soapstone also makes it special: silky smooth and very different from the glassy, brittle feel of polished granite or marble.

Whether it’s granite or quartz, an increasingly popular option for stone countertops is to have the product hone or fabricate the surface where it has a matte finish rather than the glossy, polished appearance that has been the norm for decades. Honed countertops offer a softer, more natural, feel than polished stone. To create granite with a honed finish, manufacturers use coarser abrasives and stop grinding the stone before its surface becomes shiny, leaving it with a satin or matte appearance. Polished and honed granite refer to TWO different types of surface finishes applied to your stone. The other is called Steatite. Honed finishes need to be resealed more often than polished finishes, but because of the lack of shine flaws can be concealed more easily. There are actually a lot of different types of finishes.

A honed finish is best for low maintenance, high traffic applications.
