Honed granite vs soapstone

Whether it’s granite or quartz, an increasingly popular option for stone countertops is to have the product honed , or fabricate the surface where it has a matte finish rather than the glossy, polished appearance that has been the norm for decades. Honed countertops offer a softer, more natural, feel than polished stone. A honed granite countertop will be more porous than a polished granite countertop, which means that more frequent sealing will be necessary. Some honed granite colors tend to show the hand imprints more than the polished ones.

Most natural stones are available in honed finishes. Travertine, marble, limestone, granite and soapstone are a few stones that you can find with a honed finish. From a matte like appearance to a low sheen. The finish remains flatter than a full gloss polish. I looked at honed black granite for my kitchen renovation years ago, but ended up going with soapstone.


Color-wise, soapstone doesn’t boast the same variety in color palette that granite does and it’s texture tends to be smoother and less dynamic. However, when it comes to upkeep, it requires less maintenance than granite countertops. Any experience with Lucent quartz countertops? I had soapstone in our last house, and it was high maintenance requiring oil treatments every two weeks. I must tell you that our children are grown and gone, so, it is just two adults.

I’m with you on the soapstone maintenance — what we did for our bathroom vanity remodel yrs ago was to use “Black Absolute” granite in a honed , distressed finish. I think the stone guys called our finish “leather” or “sueded”. That way, you get the flat, matte look of soapstone , but the ease (and unfortunately, cost) of granite.
